A Charming Czech Tradition (from the Twilight Zone)

On Easter Monday people get up early. The boys and men set off on a whipping trip through the village.
Boys stop at people’s homes and whip the legs of every girl and woman who live in the house. As if the whipping is not enough, a popular custom is also to grab the girl and throw her in a bath of cold water, known as an "Easter dousing".

Once all the whipping and dousing is over, the girl, strangely enough, rewards the boy with one of her painted eggs. She then ties a ribbon around his whip and he moves on to the next house.

As the boys progress through the village, their bags fill with eggs and the whips become more and more colourful, with many bright ribbons.

AUTHORS NOTE: This isn't just a tradition that I "heard" about from years past. ON the road today I saw men young and old with a firm grasp on their whipping stick marching along the road and up to doors to physically whip women. And I heard that a friend was placed in a bathtub from her brothers friends that were let into her home while she slept and placed her in the tub to splash super cold water on her....what the heck?! I'm totally dumbstruck. And then I'm supposed to reward the men for their uncouth behavior? I just dare them...they will have another thing comin to them, I guarantee! I'm not gonna bend on cultural custom on this one...but I will thank the culture for the Easter Monday holiday, because I got to stay home and enjoy the sunshine today! Love it-
